Condoriri Area

  • Altitude: 5,100m - 5,700m
  • Duration: 14 Days

This is an action-packed two weeks designed around a 5-day mountaineering adventure in the breathtaking Condoriri valley. It gives you ample time to acclimatise and to enjoy many of the other varied attractions nearby to La Paz, such as Lake Titicaca and the notorious "Road of Death"

Itinerary

DAY ONE

Arrive in La Paz, pickup from the airport to hotel. Afternoon tour of the city.

DAY TWO

Departure for Copacabana, on the shores of Lake Titicaca, sleep in Copacabana.

DAY THREE

Boat to the Island of the Sun and a chance to explore the pre-Inca constructions that still exist there. Return to La Paz.

DAY FOUR

An acclimatisation trip to Chacaltaya, the highest ski slope in the world, at 5,300m. There is the opportunity to try out some skiing, but only for those brave enough to take on the black slopes up there! Return to La Paz.

DAY FIVE

The start of your FIVE DAY MOUNTAINEERING ADVENTURE. The first day is spent travelling to the base camp in the heart of the Condoriri range. If time allows, we will practise basic techniques on at the base of the glacier.

DAY SIX

An early start onto the glacier to attempt the summit of Pequeño Alpamayo (5,350m). After returning to base camp and resting up a short while, the afternoon will be spent learning more complex climbing techniques, such as glacial traverses.

DAY SEVEN

Theory put into practise. We will be heading up to the summit of Pico Ilusion. This is not a long climb but has a number of challenging stretches, helping to prepare us for the final climb the next day.

DAY EIGHT

Cabeza del Condor (5,700m). The terrain begins on very loose gravel until we reach the ice. The ascent starts relatively gently (40-45º) until we enter into a ice canyon where the climb becomes more technical. Once reaching the summit, we return by the same route to our base camp. All in all about 13 hours.

DAY NINE

Time to break camp and return to the road head, where our transport will be waiting to take us back to La Paz (and a nice warm bed!)

DAY TEN

Rest day in La Paz

DAY ELEVEN

Mountain biking down the road of death! Whereas until recently, the mountain road to the Yungas was used by hundreds of trucks, lorries and cars on a daily basis, the construction of a new, wider, safer road for the traffic has left the “Road of Death” purely a bikers route. The downhill madness begins at 4,650m at the La Cumbre pass and ends 3,500m lower down, in the village of Yolosa. A vehicle will then take us to the hillside retreat of Coroico - beautiful!

DAY TWELVE

Rest day in Coroico. Those still with itchy feet can try horse riding or a 4x4 trek through the nearby coca plantations.

DAY THIRTEEN

Return to La Paz

DAY FOURTEEN

transfer to the airport for your flight home
